When you care for your hair, after shampooing, you apply conditioner to detangle it and make it smoother and softer. That's right! But what if you want to give your hair extra care, namely hydration, nourishment, and reconstruction, with a mask? You usually apply it after conditioner.
That's what most people do. Hair experts, however, have the opposite opinion and advise using the mask before the conditioner, for reasons I'll explain below. You'll ask me, of course, why it matters which one you put on first and which one second. The right order ensures that each product will deliver its maximum benefits. Think of hair care like skincare: each step "builds" on the previous one, so the right order will enhance the health of your hair and enhance its appearance.
It all starts with shampoo
The shampoo cleanses, removes styling product residue and removes oil and dirt from the scalp, lengths and ends. During washing, the hair cuticles open and the hair can receive the nutrients of the products that follow.
Next step: the mask
With their proteins, vitamins, oils and moisturizing ingredients, masks act as an intensive treatment for hair that is dry, dull and damaged by dyes and styling tools. As the shampoo has opened the hair cuticles, the mask ingredients penetrate deeply and offer their beneficial benefits, such as intensive nourishment, repair, reconstruction and hydration . For optimal results, leave the mask on for the time indicated on the packaging (usually 5-15 minutes).
Last but not least: το conditioner
Conditioner complements the action of shampoo. With oils and emollients and humectants, it moisturizes and detangles hair, making it softer and easier to manage, improves its texture and protects it from frizz. The role of conditioner is to close the hair cuticles that were opened by the shampoo and to “seal” the moisture and ingredients of the mask inside the hair. Therefore, if you use conditioner first, it will close the hair cuticles, essentially canceling the action of the mask . Think of it like the top coat on your manicure!
What to rememberThe shampoo cleanses, the mask nourishes and repairs damage to the hair, while the conditioner "seals" moisture and nutrients, providing softness and shine.
The mask does not replace the conditioner (unless it is a leave-in), because their role is different: the first provides deep nourishment and the second detangles.
The conditioner should be applied after every shampoo and the mask 1-2 times a week, unless your hair is dyed and damaged, in which case it needs more hydration.
I hope these tips help you get the hair you dream of!
