South Africa

South Africa was associated with the worst regime of racial discrimination, the well-known Apartheid; however, it is a country with great natural beauty and a special climate, which has allowed it to enter the world wine map with great wines. It is the country of Pinotage and Chenin Blanc, the special Sauvignon Blanc but also the neo-cosmopolitan expression of Bordeaux blends.

Nelson Mandela's country had a long history of wine production, more than three centuries. For over 350 years, the European aristocracy enjoyed the famous sweet wine of Constance, which even today is worthily compared to dessert wines such as Château d'Yquem.

During the years of Apartheid, the political and economic isolation of South Africa undoubtedly affected wine production, which, however, returned with the change of regime, facing many challenges in order to become competitive again. Small producers managed to develop in areas with unique terroir, mainly in the Cape Town area, and the Stellenboch appellation of origin gained great recognition, with the production of excellent wines.
